History

The ancient name of White Cleeve (or "Clive" in the Domesday Book) refers to the chalk escarpment that traverses the parish.[2]. RAF Clyffe Pypard was an airfield built during the Second World War.[3] The land has now been returned to farming.

The Latin phrase at the Goddard Arms Pub Cervus non Servus means the stag is not a slave was the motto of the Goddard family who owned the manor for many years.
